IPL 2023: Varun Chakravarthy of KKR said he is more concerned about accuracy than variations

Varun Chakravarthy, a leg-spinner for the Kolkata Knight Riders, believes his increased accuracy rather than use of “different variations” in the IPL is paying him.

With stats of 3/27 from his four overs, the 31-year-old Chakravarthy was the standout KKR bowler in his team's 21-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday.

“Instead of focusing on many variants, I have concentrated more on improving my accuracy. Revolutions on the ball were another area I was focusing on. With AC Prathiban, I was collaborating. He is my spin coach back in Chennai, therefore it undoubtedly succeeded, Chakravarthy remarked during the news conference after the game.

“More than that, when it comes to tactics, I always follow what Abhishek Nayar (KKR assistant coach) says. They both contributed much to my return in a positive way.

Chakravarthy, who participated in India's unsuccessful T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE, had a miserable IPL season last year, taking just six wickets in 11 games.

Chakravarthy, who claimed the vital scalps of Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, and Dinesh Karthik, said that studying recordings of an earlier encounter against the Bengaluru team helped him prepare effectively for the match against RCB.

It's a really difficult playing field. We had ideas of our own. To bowl on this field (Chinnaswamy), we made care to have separate meetings. Today, everything worked out,” he stated.

“I did review replays of games I played against RCB in the past. I could see their batsmen's technical skills and their intended targets. I was concentrating on it,” said Chakravarthy, who has taken 13 wickets from eight games this season, placing him in the top four among all wicket-takers.

Every ball you bowl has to be confidently delivered, and even if you lose confidence, your bowling will suffer.

Suyash Sharma, a fellow leg spinner who produced figures of 2/30 on Wednesday, was praised by Chakravarthy and told he may play for the national team.

Suyash Sharma has joined the squad, and I believe he has a bright future for his nation. He has incredible skill. I hope he can comprehend the kind of cricket we play and can quickly go to the national team,” he remarked.
