<p>Selectors announced that Steve Smith would start the batting for Australia against South Africa in an upcoming Twenty20 series, placing him in the driver’s seat for the position with David Warner at the World Cup in 2019.</p>

<p>In a brief Big Bash League appearance at the conclusion of the previous season, Smith, who typically bats at three or four, relaunched himself as the Sydney Sixers’ opener, smashing two scorching hundreds.</p>
<p>George Bailey, the chairman of the selectors, said it earned him the right to fill a void created by Aaron Finch’s retirement by doing the same for the first time at the international level in the sport’s shortest format.</p>
<p>“He’ll open in South Africa and I guess he’s the one guy out of those multi-format players who is heading across that we wanted to give him that opportunity,” Bailey said on Monday after naming the team.</p>
<p>His innings in the Big Bash were very thrilling and demonstrated his skill set and capabilities.</p>
<p>“We want to see him perform like he did in the Big Bash on a global scale, so it’s critical that he gets the chance to try out for that.</p>
<p>He was quite eager to show there and take part in that.</p>
<p>Prior to the 2024 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, Smith will have the opportunity to secure his position.</p>
<p>For the three T20 matches taking place in Durban from August 30 to September 3, Warner, Finch’s longtime opening partner, is taking a break.</p>
<p>Warner’s replacement could be any of Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, or even Matthew Short, a powerful rookie.</p>
<p>As a result of the former captain Finch’s retirement, Marsh was given the opportunity to lead the T20 team following his own career turnaround in the format.</p>
<p>Bailey remarked, “We’re interested to see what he does with the titled leadership next to him.”</p>
<p>“I’m excited to see what he adds from a tactical point of view because of his excellent personality and the way he drives the culture with the team.”</p>
