Joe Root on Transitioning from Reverse Scoop Out to Stable Hundred in IND vs. ENG: “Tried to Just Play”

England batsman Joe Root said that he has no regrets about the shots he chose and that he is committed to maintaining high standards in spite of the difficulties he has encountered.

Getting out to a reverse scoop on the third day of the Rajkot Test earned Root a lot of criticism. His removals caused England to collapse, going from 207-2 to 319 all out and giving up a 126-run lead to India in a match that they would eventually lose by 434 runs.

The 33-year-old, who is renowned for his traditional batting style, has come under intense criticism after mustering only 77 runs in just six innings. While Root did manage to return to form in the fourth Test in Ranchi, losing by five wickets in a nail-biting last day, it was not enough to save England from losing for the third time in a row.

“I have high expectations for myself, and I was way below where I want to be until that last Test match,” Root said to Sky Sports before to the fifth and final Test, which begins on March 7 in Dharamshala.

“I felt deficient in runs and that I hadn’t contributed as much as I had hoped to go into the trip; this is a region that I like batting in and where I’ve had success before.

“I tried to focus just on the game that was in front of me. I saw the circumstances and surroundings there (in Ranchi), and nothing ostentatious was required. It required someone to remain steady and make an effort to maintain a sense of serenity throughout,” he said.

India sealed the series with an unstoppable 3-1 lead after England lost by 5 wickets in Ranchi, raising doubts about the efficacy of England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ tactics on Indian wickets.

However, Root continues to support the team’s strategy as they get ready for the tour’s last Test in Dharamshala.

This squad, in my opinion, doesn’t “regret.” Our batting lineup in particular, as well as the consistency throughout, have been significantly different from what they were in the previous two years since Ben became captain and Brendon took over as coach.

“The larger picture is that we should be thinking about how to bring out the best in one another rather than simply going out there and killing it.

“This series has taught us stuff we didn’t know before. From a longer-term perspective, there are some elements that have placed us in a favorable position moving ahead. There are things that have been excellent throughout as well, but outcomes are obviously what people would evaluate you on the outside, according to Root.
